Dog Care Tips- Prevent tooth problems

Most people are very careful about their dental hygiene and know how important it is with healthy teeth. For dogs there is no major difference, they also need strong and healthy teeth.

We know that brushing your dog's teeth is not the easiest. Dogs are fast and it is not easy to explain to them why tooth brushing is important. But if we had been able to explain this to our little ones, we would have said that brushing is done to remove tartar on the teeth and thus reduce the risk of bacteria and gum disease.

The most common and probably also the most effective way of preventing dental problems is to brush the dog's teeth every day for it to give effect - just like for a housewife and a mat. It is possible to use ordinary, soft baby toothbrushes but there are also special toothbrushes made for dogs. There are good dog foods available in the market which you can use to prevent tooth problems.

What happens when the dog eats?

Food debris gets stuck between the dog's teeth and in food debris, bacteria that thrive down between the tooth and mucosa thrive. This results in tartar and eventually tooth loss. How long it takes depends on how the teeth are positioned, the animal's saliva composition and diet. The worse the problem becomes, the worse and more inflamed the gums become.

Gum inflammation, tartar and tooth loss in dogs are due to bacterial coatings in the mouth and can be prevented and cured with cleaning. Other illnesses may be congenital or already affecting the dog as a puppy.

Good to know about the dog's teeth:

  • Teeth are skin organs that can be compared to hair and chlorine
  • Each tooth has a nerve that makes it painful
  • Dogs have two sets of teeth: milk teeth and permanent teeth
  • The milk teeth become detached at the age of 4-6 months and are replaced by permanent teeth
  • When dogs are between 1.5 and 2 years old, the root canal of the tooth closes. Before this, your teeth are fragile, so avoid carrying heavy items or giving too hard legs
  • Always go to a veterinarian to extract milk teeth that do not come off, otherwise bite and constriction can lead to inflammation and tartar
  • Preferably go to a veterinarian and examine your dog's teeth once a year, then you will discover any damage, tartar and bug bite in time and can remedy before it starts to hurt
